I think it's amazing how quickly things like the video Linty posted get made. I know their are millions out there, so you expect it to happen quickly, but we live in a day and age where no one is safe.
It's crazy.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

Re: Bale goes ape on a production guy on Terminator`
Lets make this clear. Everything about a set requires attention and professionalism. There is this misguided perception of actors that they are privileged to be on sets.
Every position on a set is hard work. Yes, even acting is hard work. It's very hard work. Does it require lighting a scene like a Cinematographer? No. Does it require organizing the schedule and meeting deadlines like an Assistant Director? No. But, it requires a lot of focus, concentration, and effort to make your scenes believable. It's a job and it's not easy. There's a reason why people look at a Jessica Alba and know she is a joke. Simply a pretty face that got lucky. She doesn't understand the work that real actors put into their job.
Everyone that has seen a Christian Bale film knows that the guy takes his craft seriously. He's a fine good actor and there's a reason for that. He knows how hard his job is and he puts the effort into it.
An actor is going to blow up on set when someone screws up their focus the same way a DP is going to blow up on set if the gaffer doesn't light his scene correctly.
Also, a director's job isn't really to manage the entire set. They really only manage the actors. Managing the set is really the Assistant Director's job. And if you listen to the audio again, you'll hear Christian tell Bruce to not stop him from yelling at the DP. I checked the credits and the 1st AD is Bruce Franklin. So, it does look like the right guy tried to step in.
Now there's the whole question of whether Bale was being professional. I like to look at sets as a person-to-person check. Everyone knows who is higher on the totem pole. You have your producers, the director, the first AD, the DP, and it goes on. That being said, every one of those positions also acknowledges that the actors are very important and whenever an actor gets on set there is a sense of quiet for everyone. Everyone knows that if a scene is being lit and the actor is rehearsing their lines with the director, then you better light that scene quietly or just not do it at all. Again, this goes with the whole director and actor connection.
Everyone pretty much checks on the next person. It's not out of the question for a low person to tell a producer to be quiet. Will that producer like it? Probably not. But, if the producer is loud during a scene, you should expect that someone is going to tell that producer to please be quiet or they'll ruin the film they're producing.
So, I see it like this. Bale is trying to do his job and the DP is walking around during the scene (first of all, why is the DP walking around on set is beyond my understanding. He should be with the Camera Operators. Walking around on set, or walking around anywhere when a scene is being shot is rule number one of what not to do when the 1st AD tells everyone they are going for a shot. So the DP is pretty much an idiot if you ask me) distracting Bale. He brings up a perfect point. He doesn't walk around trashing his lights, so why is the DP walking around ruining his focus - perhaps the most important aspect of acting?
Considering that it seems to have been something that was going on for a while, I can't fault Bale for anything here. He's running his side of the person-to-person check. "Do your job so I can do mine." If anything, the 1st AD should have told the DP to stop walking around the set long before Bale found it beyond annoying."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Good post. I think people are reacting mostly because they don't know what a movie set is like, no offense. This is like getting excited because two players tousled a little in practice. It happens all the time. It's not the best way to handle it, but it's not really out of the ordinary for a high budget shoot with scheduling, resource and acting demands.Comment

Re: Bale goes ape on a production guy on Terminator`
Isn't it funny how the better actors are always the ones that everyone talks about being difficult to work with on movie sets?
I don't find it surprising at all.
I heard that Willem Dafoe will not converse or join his cast-mates in anything during a film. He prefers to be alone. There have been actors that have said that the first time they met Dafoe was when they shot their scene together.
Christopher Walken does not enjoy rehearsing or reshooting a scene over and over again. A lot of the time, he'll tell the director, "I'll do this scene three ways. One serious. One relaxed. And one amusing. You choose the one that works."
Marlon Brando didn't care to learn his lines. I'm not sure why not. I don't know if he had trouble memorizing them or if he just thought it was a waste of time, but he didn't want to memorize them. He'd have the lines posted on the set. There's a story that he once had the other actor wear the lines on her forehead so he could read them from there. Seriously.
A lot of that sounds like a scumbag move. Why would we want to work with these guys? But, they are great actors and who can argue with them if they know their job better than anyone else on the set?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Bale goes ape on a production guy on Terminator`
I hate to pass judgment without actually being there and knowing all of the circumstances surrounding his little tirade... But he sounds like a tight-wad who needs to get over himself. I don't see any reason to speak to anyone like that ever.
Again, though, I've got no idea what really set him off or how disruptive this guy was being; but I still don't believe anyone should ever be spoken to like that.Comment
